Commentary for the Eucharist

Before the Liturgy:

We gather as an assembly of believers to celebrate Word and Eucharist. This is the action of us all: not just the priest and deacon and other ministers, but the whole assembly. Let us open our hearts to one another and to the God who liberates us all.

Before the Liturgy of the Word:

God present in Christ Jesus is mediated by the proclamation of the Word. We respond in word, in change of heart, and in action. We acknowledge our common poverty as we listen and respond together.

Before the Offering of Gifts:

These gifts of bread and wind reflect human labor and productivity. The work we do finds meaning in the building of the kingdom of God.

Before Holy Communion:

God present in Christ Jesus is mediated by the breaking of bread and sharing of the cup. The gifts we offered, our labor and productivity, find benediction and meaning beyond what our human efforts could have acheived. We hunger and thirst, not just for this Blessed Bread and Wine, but for peace and justice throughout the world.
