Betrayal of the Spirit

On all sides, the Spirit assails the fortification and defenses the Church maintains, despite the growing and obvious indicators that those bulwarks no longer serve Church, community, and individuals; in fact, they cause embarrassment, harm, and disaffection. The more the Spirit rips asunder clericalism, paternalism, and self-investment, served by outmoded morality and antiquated theology, the more regressed and inept the response of hierarchy and neotraditional Church groups.

The betrayal of the Spirit is presided over by moralists and liturgists whose highest goal, ironically, appears to be "one's own ego and one's own desires." Unfortunate resonance is made with the fundamentalism dominating American policy and politics. Thus, American Catholicism can no longer claim moral or spiritual leadership in an ever declining society.

The Spirit uncovers the hidden dynamism and emerging truth to which John XXIII fearlessly opened the doors and windows of an entrenched institution. And the Spirit of God is indefatigable. As ever resistant instiutions continue to stumble and reveal a nakedness that is the object of ridicule when the light of transparency is shined on it, the Spirit works to shake and direct obstinant leaders.
